The UEMS Section and Board of Endocrinology, in close collaboration with the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), has contributed to two recent publications examining postgraduate specialist training, continuing medical education, and the accreditation of training centres in endocrinology across Europe.
Together, these publications provide a comprehensive overview of the current organisation of endocrinology training in European countries, highlighting both achievements and areas where further harmonisation may be beneficial. They explore key aspects of specialist education, including curriculum structures, training duration, accreditation processes, quality assurance mechanisms, continuing professional development, and workforce planning.
The findings demonstrate the commitment of national authorities, professional organisations, training institutions, and specialist societies to maintaining high standards of education and patient care. At the same time, they reveal considerable diversity in training pathways and accreditation systems across Europe, reflecting different national healthcare structures and educational traditions.
The publications contribute valuable benchmarking data that can support future discussions on quality assurance, specialist mobility, workforce needs, and the continued development of postgraduate medical training. They also reinforce the longstanding collaboration between UEMS and ESE in promoting excellence in endocrinology education and ensuring that future specialists are equipped to meet the growing healthcare challenges associated with endocrine and metabolic diseases.
